MISSION

The New Hampshire Scholars Initiative is an effort by area business and school volunteers to encourage and motivate all high school students to complete a defined, rigorous academic course of study that prepares them for successful transition to college or university coursework or vocational and technical training necessary to enter today’s competitive job market.

BENEFITS

  • Developing advanced academic skills
  • Learning strong decision-making and critical-thinking capabilities
  • Advanced preparation for success in college
  • Better candidacy for certain types of scholarships and financial aid
  • Enhanced opportunities for job placement and advancement with employers

NEED MORE REASONS?

Preparation to not only attend college but to graduate with a degree! Students who participate in this program are more likely to finish their education!

-New Hampshire Scholars are more likely to continue on to college and earn a degree which in turn means more $$! On average, college graduates earn over a million dollars more in a lifetime than students who only get a high school education!

-Groundwork for future employment! NH Scholars prepares you with the ability to communicate clearly (written and verbal), the ability to analyze information effectively, conduct research and solve complex problems.

-Building the foundation for your future! What you learn now will prepare you for a future of learning, reading, writing, speaking and listening, independent learning, study skills, higher-order thinking skills, and “thinking about thinking.”

HOW DOES IT HELP WITH COLLEGE ADMISSION OR FINANCIAL AID?

Currently 24 states participate in the State Scholars program. Across the country, colleges and universities recognize State Scholars through transcript review. In New Hampshire, colleges are well aware of the program and the rigorous course curriculum it entails. Regarding financial aid, a NH Scholar that is eligible for the Federal Pell Grant will also be automatically eligible for an additional grant called the ACG (Academic Competitiveness Grant). Visit www.studentaid.ed.gov for more information.

NH SCHOLARS: THE FOUR YEAR PLAN

You can plan to be a NH Scholar before you even enter high school!  To officially become a NH Scholar, you will need to fill out the NH Scholars Planner with the Director of College and Career Readiness.  The CCR Office will then help in the selection of courses that best fits your selected pathway. In 2015, the NH Scholars program added two additional pathways: STEM and ARTS! Click here for the requirement list for the three NH Scholars Pathways.

As stated on the NH Scholars website, we encourage students to take high school level courses in middle school to afford them the opportunity to take higher level courses later in high school. Courses taken in middle school count towards PMHS graduation requirements, however, you will need to complete the NH Scholars requirements during your high school career.

Being a NH Scholar is not just about completing the required courses, it is also a state of mind. A “scholar” is defined as “a specialist in a particular branch of study, especially the humanities; a distinguished academic”. An academic scholar must be motivated, focused and above all, a role model to other classmates. Please contact the Guidance Office if you are interested in becoming a NH Scholar.
