The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 was signed into law on July 1, 2004. This federal legislation ensures that students with disabilities will have access to a free appropriate public education (FAPE).
This Act strengthens academic expectations and accountability for the nation’s 5.8 million children with disabilities and bridges the gap that has too often existed between what children with disabilities learn and what is required in regular curriculum.
The staff of Pittsfield Elementary School recognizes that students whose educational disabilities adversely impact educational performance and who require individually planned education programs have potential for improving educational performance when they receive special education and related services. Consequently, a full continuum of special education programs are available for students from age three through grade six who meet the criteria for eligibility. Related services, such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and Counseling, are available to those students whose individual education program specifies the need.
Parents/guardians who have concerns about their child’s development are encouraged to call the Director of Student Services at 435-8432. A student may be referred for a special education evaluation by submitting a request to the Director.
