Occupational Therapy<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n

The goal of occupational therapy is to help a person be independently successful in\u00a0his\/her\u00a0meaningful and purposeful daily activities.<\/span> <\/span><\/td>\nOT\u00a0services\u00a0are approached differently for every individual.\u00a0 The method of intervention used to reach the individual’s goal(s) is determined by the occupational therapist’s clinical judgment.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Different methods\u00a0of OT intervention:<\/span> <\/span> <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
-Establish\/restore skills<\/span><\/div>\n
– Compensation strategies\/adaptations of the activity or environment<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>–\u00a0Prevention (ie. activities done on a routine basis to avoid inability to function)<\/span><\/div>\n
– Promoting health and wellness (ie. self management strategies)<\/span><\/div>\n

Occupational Therapy <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em>in\u00a0the school<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/a><\/td>\nThe function of occupational therapy in\u00a0a school is to help children\u00a0who are struggling within the classroom\/school environment be more successful in\u00a0their “jobs” which are\u00a0playing and being students.<\/span><\/td>\n\"\"<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
OT is a related service to special education.\u00a0 When a student is\u00a0referred and if it is determined\u00a0he\/she qualifies for special education services, it is also determined whether\u00a0he\/she will receive occupational therapy services. <\/span><\/td>\nWith the recommendation of the occupational therapist, if the team determines sensory, motor, and\/or perceptual\u00a0development is affecting the\u00a0student’s\u00a0ability to be successful with\u00a0classroom tasks, he\/she will begin receiving OT services once\u00a0his\/her individual education program (IEP) is written. <\/span><\/td>\nIf you have questions about\u00a0 special education referrals, please\u00a0contact the director of student services,\u00a0Tobi Chassie,\u00a0(<\/span>tchassie@ pittsfield.k12.nh.us.)<\/span> <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
One reason for a student\u2019s discharge from OT services is that sensory, motor and\/or perceptual development are no longer affecting his\/her ability to successfully function in the school and classroom environments. <\/span><\/td>\nAnother reason for discharge from OT services is\u00a0the student’s skills and independence has progressed as far as expected through OT intervention. <\/span><\/td>\nEligibility for discharge is determined by the occupational therapist’s clinical observations or an OT evaluation.\u00a0 The decision to discharge is then made by the occupational therapist and the whole team working with the student, including the parent(s).<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
