In fact, it is doubtful that the district\u2019s allocation of $300,000+ for energy costs will not adequately fund our needs.<\/p>\n<p>In response to this difficult situation, in the interest of conserving natural resources, and to ensure that our financial resources are focused on teaching and learning, the following measures are being implemented at this time. <\/p>\n<p><u>Computers<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Monitors \u2013 Monitors are to be turned off when not in immediate use and over night.<\/p>\n<p>2. Newer Computers \u2013 Newer computers (less than 7 years old) are to be set at sleep mode when not in immediate use and over night.<\/p>\n<p>3. Older Computers \u2013 Older computers (more than 7 years old) are to be turned off over night.<\/p>\n<p>4. Other Electronic Equipment \u2013 Other equipment is to be turned off at the over night.<\/p>\n<p>5. Printers \u2013 Printers are to be turned off when not to be used for an extended period during the day and over night.<\/p>\n<p><u>Heating and Cooling<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Air Conditioning \u2013 Thermostats are to be set and maintained at 78\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p>2. Blinds and Shades \u2013 Where they exist, blinds and shades are to be closed over night. <\/p>\n<p>3. Classrooms \u2013 Thermostats are to be set and maintained at 67\u00b0;<\/p>\n<p>4. Furnace and Vent Filters \u2013 Furnace and vent filters are to be inspected regularly and replaced quarterly.<\/p>\n<p>5. Gyms, Cafeterias, Kitchens, Restrooms, Auditoriums \u2013 Thermostats are to be set and maintained at 65\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p>6. Hallways \u2013 Thermostats are to be set and maintained at 62\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p>7. Nights and Weekends \u2013 Timed thermostats are to be set and maintained at 55\u00b0 for nights and weekends.<\/p>\n<p><u>Lighting<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Cleaning and Night Lighting \u2013 Lights turned on only in immediate areas being cleaned or used by staff.<\/p>\n<p>2. Day Lighting \u2013 Monitor need for evening lighting during the school day (for example, adequate lighting may be provided through windows and skylights in some locations).<\/p>\n<p>3. Natural Lighting \u2013 Natural lighting is to be used in classrooms and offices when and where practical.<\/p>\n<p>4. Planning Time \/ Meeting Time \u2013 Minimal lighting or natural lighting is to be used during planning time \/ meeting times when students are not present for instruction in classrooms, offices, and other locations.<\/p>\n<p>5. Vacant Locations \u2013 Classroom and office lighting is to be turned off when not in use for more than one minute; use of a student \u201cenergy manager\u201d to monitor lighting use is encouraged. <\/p>\n<p><u>Personal Electric Appliances<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Personal Electrical Appliances \u2013 Personal electrical appliances (coffee makers, microwave ovens, refrigerators) are to be removed from classrooms and work spaces by November 3. <\/p>\n<p><u>Other<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Vending Machines \u2013 Power to vending machines is to be turned off over night.<\/p>\n<p>2. Ventilation Units \u2013 Ventilation units are to be kept open and clear of books, supplies, equipment, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the Jordan Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhphps.org\/\">www.nhphps.org<\/a>) will be visiting our schools to conduct an energy audit. Additional measures may be taken following this important visit or as become advisable.<\/p>\n<p>Should you have a suggestion regarding energy conservation, I encourage you to share your suggestion with me during a visit to your school or via e-mail (<a href=\"mailto:sau51super@metrocast.net\">sau51super@metrocast.net<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I recognize that these measures represent a significant change to our way of life in our schools. However, I can not underestimate the importance of the three goal areas outlined above \u2013 response to increasing energy costs, resource conservation, and maximum dedication of financial resources to teaching and learning.
